The Challenge

Over 1/2 the people in the world live in cities. 3 million more move in every week. In 20 years, there will be 2 billion more – and we are not ready. How do we prepare? We need to accelerate the transition to a zero-carbon world —our future depends on it. For example, new research shows that “rising seas will erase more cities by 2050… affecting three times more people than previously thought.”* And just recently, in Boston, the 12’ King tide created flooding throughout the waterfront area.**

People + Partnerships

Implementing technology is an important part of the transition to a zero-carbon world, but not the main one. People are the main component of success. Therefore, investment in citizen engagement is critical. Also, the solutions are multifaceted. No one organization can create this type of change, thus partnerships between the city, universities, public and private sectors – and the citizens – are also critical to drive the change required to reach a decarbonized society.
